So today is the SCAD Career Fair. At it are lots of companies telling people they will never get hired. However, they all have swag, and it is my duty to inform you of the quality of said swag. So, here are just a few examples.

SCAD
SCAD swag
I have to give credit to my school, they did a decent job when it came to advertising themselves to students who already go there. They had at least two varieties of pens, one with a bobble head and one with a twisty cap. They also had an entire room devoted to relaxation, which included tables for us game design majors to hang out, brownies, cookies, a masseuse, fortunes, and stress cards. And a big tub of free Dasani. However, not a whole lot of variety amongst all of it. It would have been nice to see some toys in all of it.

Activision
Activision Swag

Maaaajor props to Activision. Major props. Their swag was off the chain. Fold-out pens with clips for holding stuff on the end, frisbees, hackey sacks, and bottle-opener keychains, cool business cards with the Raven logo on the back. Not a damn thing was missing. Also, that’s how they introduced themselves. “Welcome to Activision! Take some swag!” I can’t give them anything less than a perfect score.

Swag Rating: 7/7

Lucasarts

Lucasarts swag
Not bad. A decent effort on Lucasart’s part. They had a little flap with lots of photos and portfolio work, and only one picture of George Lucas, whom apparently they just refer to as “George.” Their pen is also badass. It’s got the little Lucasarts guy floating in water. Although I worry about him in there, drowning, with only one little bubble to supply him air. Points off for torturing their own logo.

105.3
Radio swag

I just had to. This booth was too sad to be true. Apparenly 105.3 was recruiting DJ’s? Or sound designers to make the noises of stuff falling out of the closet? I have no idea, but all they had for swag for this clicky pen obviously from Office Max who helped them paste their logo on it. And the woman at the booth just looked sad and pathetic. So, sad woman, only a pen, this is a SWAG Rating of the lowest variety.

Transmission ended.

So this is my third class in a row.

Class 1: Learning Maya. Very handy.
Class 2: Learning/Playing Unreal. Very fun!
Class 3: Flash. Know it. Bored. Easy A. Sick of Flash. Etcetera.

I’ve been here at Montgomery Hall since 8am. Not even kidding. Although really it’s not as bad as one would think. As of right now, it’s the length of a regular high school day. The only difference is, I’ve had 2 classes… if you can even call the second class a class as of today. All we did was play UT2004. Then again all we did in the first class was watch the trailers for “Little Big Planet” and “Crysis” and talk about Dracula. So yeah. So far a pretty fun day, but this third class? Far too serious for the subject, especially considering I already know Flash. Maybe it’s because there’s 20 people in here, versus 6 in my first class and about 13 or 14 in my second one.

I should feel more guilty about not paying attention than I do. Why hasn’t Adobe come out with a new version of Flash yet? Or Dreamweaver? Change of subject: We can cheat on our quizzes. That’s kind of badass. Just a bit. Not that I’ll need to. God I’m cocky. I want to get back to learning Maya. What’s funny is that Josh seems to hate UnrealEd. I love it. Time to take the only pre-test…

Well, I got 100/100 and completely B.S.’ed a couple questions. Who’s cocky? I’m cocky. Yeah. Awwwww yeah.

Finally a time for an update, Canadian style. Just kidding. That would be sad. But anyway, my spring break has come a close and with it a week of sitting around and doing nothing. I needed that, honestly, after the stress of last quarter. This time around I get to learn Maya and make some of the first levels from NightRise. Just need to decide which ones. Very tricky decision.

Speaking of which, I tweaked some bits of the design over break, specifically the combo moves. Originally, the gun combos were completely different from the sword combos, but I decided against that, making the combos pretty much the same between both guns and swords, giving each weapon type a melee/block, a stealth maneuver, a back attack, a double attack, an AOE, and an air to ground maneuver. Still debating about the air juggling. As much as the combat is going to be like Devil May Cry, the aerial combat is a bit much for a game about fighting terrorists. You’ll be able to attack from the air, but to float in the air while holding the enemy there and hitting them too is a bit much. That may change by Chapter 2, but for Chapter 1? Nah.

Um so yeah that’s it. I had this whole long, rant planned a few days ago but then completely forgot what it was about and still haven’t remembered. Until next time.

The Fuego model was coming out like crap so I’ll try again at a later point. Next week I’ll be making a bunch of weapon models for the game, though, so I’ll post some pictures of them once they’re done. Names included.

I’m just really glad this semester is over. Sure there’s another one in just 10 days but I intend to make the most of those ten days by going home and doing absolutely nothing but some casual modeling and some heavy drinking. A good combination if you ask me. I hate planes though. 4 planes in one week. Ouch. Oh well, I guess that’s why they call it a vacation. You vacate everywhere far too quickly. Blah.

New models soon though. Promise.

So after having been working on the Fuego model for a couple weeks it’s beginning to take a form I actually like. Unfortunately, all that’s done is the head and it has to be done by Wednesday. I’ll be posting not only pictures but also a brief “making of” with this one, showing how the sketches were translated into an actual 3D model using 3D Studio MAX 8. Keep an eye out for that sometime next week.
